Drove past this building designed by Eric Owen Moss the other day and it quite literally stopped me in my tracks. See more out-of-the-box work from Moss here...

Can't quite get over this house designed by Battersby Howat. There's something lovely about the modern architecture amidst the rustic mountain setting.

John Pawson's architecture is completely blowing me away today. I could stare endlessly at all of his work.

...lately i've been lusting over clean, modern architecture with a hint of drama. these buildings, seen through the eye of douglas friedman, are total show-stoppers.

...some beautiful watercolor paintings that stopped me in my tracks while perusing the portfolio of ac martin. i love that this is part of their design process. it reminds me a bit of when i discovered gehry's paper models. just an unconventional way of visualizing the potential of a space...

designer spotlight: antoni gaudi

ever since i learned about the spanish architect, antonio gaudi, in design school, i've been increasingly fascinated with his architecture and overall body of work. no one else has done anything quite like it since him, and there's no denying his buildings make a statement. i hope to one day visit barcelona and see these in the flesh. here are a few of my favorites:

(from top to bottom: caso batllo - 1907, casa mila - 1910, colonia guell - 1915, segrada familia - 1926)

john lautner

finally went to see the john lautner exhibit at the hammer, and was blown away. the exhibit was incredibly inspiring and a magnificent display of his genius. it was particularly amazing to see all of the hand drafted plans under glass. i couldn't believe the detail in some of his perspectives and plans, it really made me want to hand draft again like we did in school. truly groundbreaking for his time. the bottom photo is very reminiscent of the famous julius schulman photo of the stahl house.

facades

there's nothing more alluring to me than a beautiful building facade. i'm a big believer in the 'judging a book by it's cover' saying, and i think the exterior of a building (or person, for that matter) says a lot about what's inside.

very mies van der rohe. the wide open window panes really make this space.

loving this ultra-modern layout with a subdividing frosted glass panel. i've always been drawn to the concept of a dining area on a raised level. it's very intimate and sophisticated.
